In 2022, a new Victory Garden at St John’s Village in North Portland was envisioned and planned. Chartered through a Metro Central Enhancements grant, work on the Victory Garden was underway with the support of Village participants and other volunteers.
Work included clearing and grading, installation of a pathway and new retaining wall, planting of various trees and plants, and installation of a water feature, garden bench and entry, and other village improvements. Much of the work was completed using re-purposed materials from Vet-owned local small business, GI Junk.
The garden was completed and opened in 2023 and is a place of peace, bringing refuge and rest to the participants of the host Village, a 19-unit transitional housing supportive community led by Do Good Multnomah. At the nearby St. Johns Farmers Market, visitors can sign up to tour the garden on the 4th Saturday of each month throughout the summer.
